1916 Commemoration

20160217_114616-1_resizedIn commemoration of the 1916 Rising, our school has been studying the events of the Rising in great detail.

Today (12th February), sixth class had a visit from RTE’s Joe Duffy. Mr Duffy is the author of the bestselling and critically acclaimed book titled ‘The Children of the Rising’. In preparation for this visit, sixth class have been focusing on the children killed in the 1916 Rising. We really enjoyed Mr Duffy’s visit, we would like to thank him for coming and hope to see him again soon. We all think that the children of the Rising should never be forgotten.

We also want to thank local historian Gearóid O’ Brien from Athlone Library for visiting our school to inform us of the 1916 Rising and the local Westmeath connections to the event.

As part of the ‘One Book One Town’ program, we are currently reading the award winning novel ‘The Guns of Easter’ by Gerard Whelan. This book focuses on the hardships experienced by a young boy in Dublin during the Rising.

Finally, a word of thanks to all the staff for arranging these fascinating events.
