On 24th January 2019, Ms. Murphy’s 5th Class had the opportunity to participate in a samba drumming workshop with Kieran Gallagher from Kada Ka Boom Arts. Kieran gave the children a brief history of samba music and its Afro/Brazilian origins and where it can be found today. He then continued with warm up exercises to get a little rhythm developing in everyone whilst introducing the elements of pulse – rhythm, dynamics, structure and tempo. This was followed with all the children learning a rhythm. Kieran introduced everyone to the family of Samba instruments, their names and how they are played. The drums were then handed out and by the end of the session the children themselves were playing a rhythm on the samba drums!
