St. Mary’s Primary School celebrated Maths Week from the 14th to 18th of October 2024, in partnership with the national Maths Week Ireland initiative, with a range of exciting activities designed to engage students and make Maths both fun and relevant. Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities such as puzzles, Maths games, interactive learning, Maths Trails, Maths Week TV and paired activities with Junior and Senior classes.
A feature of the celebration was the use of “Maths Eyes,” where pupils were encouraged to observe the world around them and find examples of Maths in their everyday environment. This led into one of the most exciting activities of the week: Maths Trails. These trails were set up around the school grounds, where students, equipped with their “maths eyes,” followed a path solving Maths clues and applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Many Junior and Senior Classes paired up and completed Maths Trails or other fun Maths activities.
In addition, students practiced “Maths Talk“. This was particularly useful during group activities, including when senior and junior classes paired up for Maths games and challenges.
Some classes also participated in Mathletics, an interactive online Maths platform and competed in daily quizzes, adding a sense of fun and competition.
Maths Week at St. Mary’s Primary School was very enjoyable, with students actively engaging in a variety of fun and engaging Maths activities. From Maths Trails and interactive games to using their “Maths Eyes” and practicing “Maths Talk,” pupils developed stronger Maths skills and confidence. The collaboration between classes and the use of both concrete and online resources like Maths Week TV enriched the experience, leaving students excited about Mathematics and its relevance in everyday life.
