Discover the Rich Legacy of St Mary's Primary School

Explore the fascinating journey of our school, from its humble beginnings to its pivotal role in the community today.

The Early Years: Foundations and Growth

Until 1940, young girls on the Leinster side of Athlone attended the Bower National School, while boys went to the Marist National School. These institutions served children aged 4 to 12. In 1940, the Infant School was established at Fair Green, marking a significant development with five classrooms. On September 1, 1941, Madame Dominic Teresa led the transition of young girls to this new school, joined by boys from the Marist School, totaling 183 pupils. The community faced challenges, such as the Athlone Woollen Mills fire in 1940, which left many families struggling.

Expansion and Development in the Mid-20th Century

The late 1940s saw the addition of two classrooms and a block of toilets to the original building. As Athlone’s population grew in the 1950s, a second building with four classrooms was constructed. In 1971, a third structure with five rooms was added. The school thrived in the 1970s and 1980s, accommodating over 500 infants across multiple classes.

Modernization and Amalgamation

Post-1st class, girls transitioned to the Girl’s Senior National School, while boys moved to the Marist National School. The latter’s current building was erected in 1963. Leadership changes in the 1980s and 1990s saw the introduction of lay principals. Declining enrollments in the 1990s led to the 1998 amalgamation of the schools into two campuses, under the leadership of Ms. Mary Daly and Ms. Mgt. Naughton, forming the new St Mary’s National School.
